October 22nd may be just another day for most of us, but Microsoft is hoping it will be a big day for them with the retail launch of their newest Operating System, Windows 7. Windows 7 is the operating system that Microsoft hoped Vista would have been. I have been using the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) on my Fusion VM for a few months now and my overall impressions are positive.

It starts up relatively quickly, drivers already exist to make peripherals (scanners, printers etc.) work with it, and it does clever things that XP, doesn't do. Compared to Vista, Windows 7 feels turbocharged: computers will boot up faster and connect to a Wi-Fi network more quickly; searching for files and documents is easier, and results will be delivered more quickly. Aesthetically, there are little differences from Vista and Windows 7 but the major improvements are under the hood. Power management, support for various hardware platforms are some of the enhancements.

Windows 7 will be a real breath of fresh air for Windows users who have struggled with Vista for the last couple of years. For the XP faithfuls, it will be a harder decision to migrate to Windows 7. However, Windows 7 offers a XP compatibility mode for those that choose to migrate and have to deal with software compatibility issues.

So, if you are coming up for a hardware upgrade from an XP machine, or just tired with Vista, your wait is finally over! On a lighter note, I have started my computing use with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista and now Windows 7. There is a long story about how these versions were named. But, it seems that Microsoft has finally simplified it and is going to stay with Windows 7 8 and so on.
