Realty Tech Talk

I have been thinking about this blog post for quite some time. In a number of meetings recently, I have come across people that say "that technology doesn't work for me because I work this way". A good conversation that I was recently involved in was the very popular iPhone vs. Blackberry discussion. Is there an answer for this one? Well, I would say "It depends" and it really does. For someone that is very used to the Blackberry and uses it heavily for email and the BB keyboard and feels it is the next best thing since sliced bread, is the move to an iPhone a good one?

Recently, I was talking with an agent that has the "classic" cell phone and was looking to make the move to a smart phone (hooray!) and asked which one (iphone or blackberry) is better? After asking a few questions and finding out that she will use it minimally for email but will use a lot of the mobile apps, I was confident in recommending the iPhone.

I am hoping you are getting the drift here. There is no one technology that fits all, as our needs are different and we are set in the way we do things (ain't that the truth!). Different strokes for different folks. So, before you switch to the latest and greatest technology, just ask yourself this question "How will this change help me become more productive?" and if you are struggling with the answer, then you know the answer! Another way to look at it is to step back and ask yourself, what are some of the challenges you face in your business that a technology solution could solve? That will also go a long way in finding the right one that fits you.

If technology cannot improve and make you more productive, then just say "NO" and continue on as at some point you will find the right technology that will make sense to you.

Paul - Thanks for your comments. If you can use the resource room computer for all your work at the office and never have to do a presentation away from your office, then you don't need a laptop. But I seriously doubt that. Laptop is essential today to be very productive.

Pat - Thanks for your comments. Agreed!

I have been leaning towards purchasing a laptop as a backup to my home desktop to use when I go to my office. Our office already have many Desktops to be used by agents. Truth be told I can keep in touch with emails, messaging and most everything I need on the new 3G, 16GB iPhone. Zillow and Trulia are apps as well as the Navigator speaking turn by turn GPS. I even created an Amimoto 1 1/2 minute photo presentation with music on the iPhone. There's a white pages app and a yellow pages app. There is nothing out there in smartphones that compare to the iPhone. The Blackberry curve was my phone brfore the iPhone. Do I really need a laptop?

Here's another thought. Ask agents who use an iPhone or a Blackberry if they would use it again. Who is their provider? Some programs have different features depending on the provider--Smarter Agent for example. Today an agent told me that his iPhone sometimes doesn't forward attachments--I didn't get the attachment on my Blackberry but it was in my e-mail inbox. Whatever works for you is what you should use. As Nike says, "just do it". I used to be like the 3G commercial on TV. Three friends are talking--two have new 3G phones and the third just has a cell phone, he says something like "I just make phone calls, don't need one of those" while the other two talk about all the features they have and use. Just getting your e-mail on a smart phone changes how you do business. Not being tied to a computer for e-mail makes you more productive and sets you free in many ways.
