As you may know, Windows 7 is the next generation desktop operating system from Microsoft. Despite two years of positive spin from Microsoft, it's clear that Windows Vista is their biggest flop to date in the desktop arena. (Yes bigger than ME, due to the extent it was promoted, remember the seinfeld Ad!).

For the record, Windows (mostly Vista) sales fell 8% in Microsoft's second quarter (the internal group that houses Vista, fell 13%) and they blamed it on the economy. Part of it is the economy, but how do you explain that in the same period, Apple which exists in the same economy boosted MAC sales by 9% in the same quarter! (Source: Information Week)

Clearly, Microsoft should get the message to move on from Vista sooner than they expect. Enter, Windows 7. See the Walt Mossberg's (one of my favorite personal technology columnist from WSJ) initial review of Windows 7.

Microsoft to date has not committed to releasing Windows 7 in 2009. They state that Windows 7 will ship approximately three years after the January 2007 launch date of Vista. We seem to be in a "bailout" economy and Microsoft might be looking for one for its own product, Vista. If recent news from Microsoft is any indication, my prediction is that they will have it ready for the 2009 holiday season.

I am very disappointed w/ Vista, its very slow and has alot of glitches, so I am hopeful that Windows 7 is better.

I've avoided Vista for all the reasons anyone and everyone mentions. This would be the year for a new laptop but I'm holding on to the one I have for that reason--upgraded the RAM which helped. Walt mentioned that Windows 7 wouldn't have the same bundle of programs--that's not nice! Give us things for years and then tell us we have to pay for them---g-r-r-r-r. Can't have everything I guess. Seems like Microsoft should just let go of Vista and move on--the cut your losses theory. Hope they work out the tricky part of upgrading from XP to Windows 7 very soon too.

Again, thanks to Rajeev for keeping us on the edge of what's new!

They are giving away a test version that you can download to try it. I don't know if it is still available but my understanding is that it is free to the public to try but I am not sure where to find the free test. My guess is you go to the microsoft website to see it. I just got a new laptop with Vista and I am hoping that they will let one upgrade when the 7 comes out. Will we have a problem with our network with the new version if we use 7 as our system?

If you google free trial of windows 7 you can download it play in it. However there are warnings that you need to be careful to backup your computer before hand to make sure you don't lose information. It looks like a great place to start. Here is the website information site. good luck

Gwen (RTT member) sent this to me that might help others:

After I bought a new HP laptop with Vista early in 08, I was having so many problems that I purchased the Microsoft Technical Support Plan serviced by IYogi for $119.99 per year. I can't tell you how many times I called them and how many times they've saved my life. My laptop is never running properly when I need it. The plan is well worth the expense and if they doubled the price, I'd still buy it. You can reach them at 1-866-922-5052. They are available 24/7 (you are calliing India) and they can fix just about anything remotely. They've brought me lots of good Karma

I would think Microsoft would have an easy upgrade path for Vista. There may be a marginal upgrade cost but I would be surprised if it is very high. Also, I would not recommend you try the windows 7 (beta) version currently available unless you have some time to "geek" yourself...wait for the official release late this year/early next year.

Lastly, once it is released, unless your are very dissatisfied with Vista you can take your time to upgrade to manage your upgrade costs.

Unless you are of the "geeky" type, please be careful venturing into Windows 7

Can't blame you in avoiding Vista. They fixed quite a few bugs with their Service Pack 1 release. I would think considering they have a large XP subscriber base, they will figure out the steps for an easy migration to Windows 7. Let's see how painful will it be for the wallet.. Time will surely tell.
