Realty Tech Talk

Z57 is my web site host and they recently sent me a bill for $35 for one year to renew my domain name. (Or 5 years at $99). I thought that it seemed high and they referred me to Go Daddy to renew at $10 for one year, but warned that Go Daddy would not keep my info confidential and I would receive constant solicitations for additional web sites. How does this work, what is reasonable to pay?

You should be fine with Go Daddy. $10 - 15 is reasonable.

I used to have my domain names with Network Solutions and transferred them to Go Daddy over year ago. I don't know what Z57 was referring to by not keeping your info confidential--there's a registry that tells who owns what so if you want to buy a domain you know when it expires and who owns it. You can even ask to be notified when a particular domain is "up for grabs".

Seems to me you should just transfer and not worry. Don't think anyone will be calling you just because you switch. I haven't been contacted since changing. I think Z57 knows what they do to get other business and are "warning" you about actions they use themselves to get busines to try to keep you.

Would suggest you buy multiple years too. Cheaper, easier etc.

You can transfer to Godaddy safely, as was said previously. Z57 is probably referring to your "whois" data which has your registration information available via the internet (this may be your home address/phone #). You can pay GoDaddy an extra fee ($10 / year) for "private registration". This will allow you to have business information show up rather than your personal information. It will still be cheaper than Z57 and if your intention is to hold onto the domain, then paying GoDaddy for multiple years of ownership will reduce the per year cost. You also won't have to worry about renewing every year.
