Aren't there too many! For the most part I ignore invites that are not from the "vital few" - LinkedIn and Facebook. I love the defintion (courtesy: 60second marketer) for LinkedIn and Facebook:

LinkedIn is a Trade Show – a slightly more formal place to meet other business people and connect with them primarily for business purposes

Facebook is a Pub – an informal place to talk casually and get to know people on a more personal basis

(Bonus!) Twitter is like a Cocktail Party – an energetic place where there are many conversations going on at once

With Plaxo they got into the game a bit later than the should have. I used Plaxo for online address book management and the benefit was it kept it across multiple email systems but didn't make the transition before LinkedIn did to business networking platforms. And now recently they launched the Plaxo Pulse which does pretty much similar things compared to LinkedIn.

Most services go through your e-mail contacts and let you know which of your e-mail contacts already use the service. [For me] LinkedIn generated probably 40 to 50 matches; Plaxo probably generated four to five, all within my sphere of influence. The number of business users on LinkedIn blows away Plaxo! So, Plaxo's road is uphill and it is looking at the 800 lb gorrilla (LinkedIn) ahead of it....

Hi To All, I was at the recent Inman Connect Event in NYC last week for 2 days. There were far less BLOGGING seminars-- remember the rage for the last 2 years..?? Social Networking was all over the place yet in several seminars the panelists were asked... have you put $ in the bank because of using Social Media? they all agreed it makes sense from a professional point ( networking) but caution was advised that it takes a chunk of time to do it right There are an estimated 40 sites that try to get everyone linked. One panelist, a Remax agent in NY, said she spends only 2 hours a day on these sites. I am only on LinkedIn but wonder if agents who are head strong into it actually benefit.

Thanks, Al Clark, realPING Click To Talk, Scranton PA

I don't think you need to get away from Facebook. As a matter of fact, I would recommend focus on facebook and LinkedIn. The larger question is what is your personal goal from these two social networking platforms? For me it is to study the platforms and see what works best for different situations. On the other hand, for a real estate agent I would think the primary reason is to generate leads. But you have to establish trust first by offering value in conversations/discussions. Many a time I have noticed agents talking to each other rather than going after new business. That is the challenge and will require focus on one's part to make this work for them. Otherwise, it can become a tremendous time waster!
